Hanoi Archbishop returns home on last day of the Annual Assembly of the Vietnamese Bishops' Conference

As the Annual Conference of Vietnamese bishops being concluded, Hanoi archdiocese celebrated the homecoming of their beloved shepherd, Archbishop Joseph Ngo Quang Kiet.

Even in such a short notice, the crowd rushed out to Noi Bai airport Friday morning April 9, 2010to greet Archbishop Joseph Ngo who has been in Rome for treatment of insomnia and stress since Mar 4. It was described as a bittersweet moment for some as they were facing rumors and conflicted information about his replacement for the Archdiocese of Hanoi.. Public opinions on the Vietnamese websites were reaching a boiling point as to why and how (the replacement) comes about. His surprised return would help easing these concerns and speculations.

Besides missing out his chance to participate in the annual conference and to meet his colleagues, archbishop Joseph Ngo appeared to be in good spirit and healthy.

Coincidental with the return of the archbishop is the Annual Assembly of the Vietnamese Bishops which is being wrapped up Friday noon April 9 in Vung Tau after 4 days of hard work for Cardinal JB Pham Minh Man and 26 other bishops. As reported by bishop Joseph Vo Duc Minh of Nha Trang diocese, several goals for the Assembly have been achieved, such as discussion on the content of the next joint letter to be published in October when the XI Grand Assembly of the Vietnamese Bishops is expected to take place in Saigon, ratification of the booklet "Guide for Training Our Priests: Orientation and Instruction" (Ratio Vietnam); preparations for the opening ceremony for Assembly for Children of God on Nov 21, 2010 and closing ceremony for the Holy Year on Jan, 5 2011. The Assembly has also been briefed about the construction planning for Lavang pilgrimage center and discussed about the life and work of the late Fr. Leopold Cadiere MEP.(1869-1955), a prominent anthropologist of the diocese of Hue.

Another notable achievement of the Assembly is the formation of a Editing Committee whose duty is to coordinate with the secretariat of the Bishops' Conference in preparation of a comprehensive document (instrumentum laboris), in addition to the consolidation of the offices of the Bishops' Conference as well as of its various committees.

Last but not least, the Assembly had unanimously agreed on the establishment of the College of Advanced Theology for the Church of Vietnam at the suggestion of bishop Peter Nguyen Van Kham, chairman of the Catholic Education Committee.

The meeting has ended on Friday afternoon and the bishops were all invited to stay for the Dedication Ceremony of the Ba Ria Cathedral on Saturday morning by local bishop Thomas Nguyen Van Tram.
